As we know, the purpose of the education system is multifaceted, encompassing the development of intellectual, emotional, social, and ethical aspects of individuals to create a harmonious and progressive society.
Rational thought and action: Education aims to foster critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the ability to make informed decisions based on evidence and facts.
Compassion and empathy: Education seeks to cultivate empathy and the ability to understand and connect with others, promoting kindness and tolerance.
Courage and resilience: Education helps individuals develop the courage to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and persevere in the face of adversity.
Scientific temper and creative imagination: Education encourages a scientific mindset that values evidence-based thinking and nurtures creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills.
Sound ethical moorings and values: Education emphasizes the importance of ethical behavior, integrity, and values that contribute to personal and societal well-being.
Engaged, productive, and contributing citizens: Education aims to prepare individuals to actively participate in society, contribute positively to their communities, and fulfill their responsibilities as citizens.
Equitable, inclusive, and plural society: Education seeks to build a society that is fair, inclusive, and respectful of diversity, promoting social justice and equality for all.
The Constitution of India specifies that education should align with the fundamental principles and values enshrined in the country's constitution, such as justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 formulated by a committee led by Dr. K. Kasturirangan is a comprehensive framework for the development of education in India. The NEP 2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on July 29, 2020, marking a significant milestone in the country's education system. The origins of the NEP 2020 can be traced back to the need for a transformative and inclusive education policy that addresses the challenges and aspirations of the changing needs of the 21st century.
The last decade has witnessed a paradigm shift in higher education in India with the dawn of the number of Central and State Universities and Higher Education Institutions (HEI)s offering dual-mode education i.e. offline as well as online. Despite this tremendous growth in higher education infrastructure and steady improvement in the Gross Environmental Ratio (GER) across higher education institutions; the challenge being faced by the HEIs is still the maintenance of education standards.
As pointed out by NEP 2020 standardization can be achieved by the development of multi-disciplinary and holistic education across all the disciplines of sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, and technology to ensure the unity and integrity of education.
A road map for the implementation of NEP 2020 comprises a variety of components viz. changes in curriculum, examination reformations, and well-defined policy for research.
Special emphasis is to be given to Skill Development and Experiential Learning with the development of next-gen teaching-learning ways, Equity, and Inclusion in education.
Attention is to be given to the development of the conceptual understanding and critical thinking abilities of the student. To ensure conceptual understanding, education should be made available in regional languages.
The assessment should be proactively formative rather than summative.
HEIs should provide flexibility to the students to opt for a learning trajectory. HEIs should come up with programs considering the needs, talents, and interests of the students. There should be no hard boundaries between subjects from Arts, Humanities, and STEM, between curricular and extracurricular activities, etc.
